The Records Management Section is responsible for records management, data protection, and freedom of information within the University of Edinburgh.  The Data Protection Act, the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act and the Environmental Information (Scotland) Regulations give you the right to access information held by the University.  These pages will tell you how to exercise your rights under the legislation.

Student records

The Records Management Section does not manage student records.  The University Registry is responsible for the student records system and for supplying transcripts and statements of academic record.  If your enquiry concerns student records or transcripts please contact the Registry at:

University companies

The University has a number of subsidiary companies. A list of these companies and a description of their activities is available on the finance department website. These companies are separate legal entities and are responsible for their own freedom of information and data protection compliance. If you would like to contact the companies to make a request for information under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 or the Data Protection Act 1998 please contact the company directly. Details of how to contact the companies is given in their publication schemes, which are linked to from the finance department website.
